Event Description:
MARION — This week, dozens of Marion High School students will be honored for their academic achievements in the study of Spanish, by their induction into La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society).

This year 34 students will be inducted. The ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Walton Performing Arts Center at MHS. La Sociedad’s 36 graduating seniors will also be honored at the ceremony.

The purpose of La Sociedad is to recognize high academic achievement of high school students in Spanish and Portuguese languages. To qualify for La Sociedad, a Marion High School student must complete Spanish I, II, and III, and have a GPA of 3.6 or higher in those courses. He or she must also have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, the student must display a positive attitude toward the study of Spanish language and culture.

MHS students in La Sociedad are encouraged to take Spanish IV (dual credit) and Spanish V (honors/AP). When La Sociedad members graduate from Marion High School, they wear honor cords with their commencement attire. Members are also eligible for multiple scholarships through the national academic organization.

La Sociedad provides more than $160,000 in awards and scholarships annually to its chapters and members. It is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

There are more than 2,000 national and international chapters of La Sociedad. The MHS chapter, named Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, was established in 2009. Since then, more than 250 Marion High School students have been inducted. Several students have continued their study of Spanish in college.
